The Cardinals announced on Monday that the club optioned second baseman Kolten Wong to Triple-A Memphis. That clears up roster space for shortstop Jhonny Peralta, who is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday.

Wong, 25, has had a rough season, batting .222/.306/.286 with a total of four extra-base hits in 144 plate appearances. He’ll at least get regular at-bats in the minors, which will help him get back on track. Wong inked a five-year, $25.5 million contract extension with the Cardinals back in March.

Peralta is expected to handle third base as Aledmys Diaz has claimed shortstop as his own. Matt Carpenter will shift over to second base. Peralta hasn’t played third base since 2010 with the Tigers.
