Jon Heyman of Today’s Knuckleball reported on Tuesday morning that the Cubs have promoted outfield prospect Albert Almora from Triple-A Iowa. He’ll fill the roster spot of Jorge Soler, who strained his left hamstring during Monday’s game against the Phillies.
Almora, 22, was ranked the Cubs’ fifth-best prospect and the 80th-best prospect overall coming into the 2016 season by MLB Pipeline. With Iowa this season, Almora hit .318/.335/.444 with 18 extra-base hits, 30 RBI, 33 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases.
Though Soler was playing mostly every day, manager Joe Maddon has also used Matt Szczur and Kris Bryant in left field, so we’ll have to see exactly how Almora fits into the Cubs’ plans.
