Texas did a bunch of 40-man roster housecleaning to prepare for the offseason and in doing so lost left-hander Joseph Ortiz on waivers to the Cubs.
Ortiz held his own as a 22-year-old rookie last season, but spent this year in the minors and was limited to just 15 appearances due to a fractured foot suffered when he was struck by a motorcycle.
He’s strictly a reliever, never starting a game in his professional career, but the 5-foot-7 southpaw posted a 2.47 ERA and 52/11 K/BB ratio in 58 innings at Triple-A and has a 2.44 ERA in 321 total innings as a minor leaguer. If health he could be a useful middle reliever for Chicago.
