Nationals center fielder and leadoff man Denard Span has appeared in only 59 of a possible 109 games this season and he’s been on the disabled list since early July with a lingering back injury.

Span experienced another setback last week when he tried to shag balls and take batting practice, and now he’s acknowledging that there is no timetable whatsoever for his return to the active roster.

“I really don’t know,” Span told Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post on Saturday when asked whether he’s done for the year. “I don’t know. On the days that I don’t feel good, I second guess that. But on the days like today that I feel good, I do have hope that I will be able to return before the season’s over with.”

Span led the major leagues in hits last year and has produced a strong .304/.367/.430 batting line this season when healthy. Washington is 35-24 when the 31-year-old is in the lineup and 22-28 when he is not.
