Farrell turns down chance to interview for Indians managerial job

Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell has taken himself out of consideration to be the Indians’ next manager, saying: “My desire is to fulfill the commitment between Boston and myself.” Farrell spent five of his eight big-league seasons in Cleveland, going 32-30 with a 3.93 ERA as a starter, and served as the Indians’ farm director from 2001 to 2006 before becoming the Red Sox’s pitching coach. His father, Tom Farrell, also played in the Indians’ minor-league system. Given his history in Cleveland the Indians’ job would seemingly be a good fit for Farrell, who has said previously that he’d like to manage some day. However, he’s now turned down chances to interview with the Indians, Mariners, and Pirates in the past two years, leading to speculation that he’s been given some sort assurances about one day replacing Terry Francona.
