Mariners ace Felix Hernandez vowed to the fans in Seattle last week that he would start the club’s regular season finale on Sunday against the A’s. Fortunately or unfortunately, it appears that M’s management has intervened.
Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that Hernandez will not make another start this season, presumably because of a high innings total.
King Felix, 24, turned in a stellar 2.27 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 232 strikeouts in 249 2/3 frames this season but was held to a 13-12 record because of a historically anemic Mariners offense. We’re hoping that it doesn’t cost him the American League Cy Young Award, because he truly has been the best all-around pitcher on that side of baseball this season.
