Fields to have season-ending hip procedure

Ryan Young of the Kansas City Star reports that Royals infielder Josh Fields is about ready to undergo hip surgery that could sideline him for the remainder of the 2010 season.

The Royals picked up Fields this offseason when they traded third baseman Mark Teahen to the White Sox. Fields was placed on the disabled list just before Opening Day, however, and is likely to spend the next several months there. His procedure will be performed in Colorado under the supervision of renowned hip specialist Marc Philippon, who has also worked with Alex Rodriguez in recent years.

Fields, 27, hit .222/.301/.347 with seven home runs and 30 RBI in 239 at-bats last season. If healthy, he would have served as a utility infielder this year in Kansas City.
