Jered Weaver: “I almost wish they would tell me I need surgery.”

Angels starter Jered Weaver has had a tough start to the spring. After topping out at 80 MPH during a game against the Dodgers, the Angels had him undergo more testing. He was diagnosed with degeneration in his cervical spine. Weaver also said he has a bulging disk in his neck, which doesn’t cause pain so much as irritation.

As Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports, there isn’t much doctors can do for Weaver at this point. Weaver said, “Dr. Weaver is the one that is going to take it from here on out.”

Weaver added, somewhat depressingly, “I almost wish they would tell me I need surgery.”

He intends to be ready for the regular season, but the Angels haven’t determined yet if he’s reliable enough for inclusion on the 25-man roster. The Angels owe him $20 million this season, the final year of his five-year deal.
