Johan Santana diagnosed with left shoulder fatigue

Mets left-hander Johan Santana was sent to New York earlier this week for a checkup exam after experiencing discomfort in his surgically-repaired shoulder following a three-inning rehab start.

That exam took place today. And the results are pretty much what we expected them to be.

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the Mets’ medical staff has diagnosed Santana with “left shoulder fatigue,” and have asked that he refrain from throwing a baseball for the next week.

Santana has no structural damage and should be able to get back on track next Friday, but there’s no guarantee that he will return to the majors this season. The southpaw hasn’t pitched in the bigs since September 2, 2010. He’s owed a salary of $24 million next season and $25.5 million in 2013.
