Tigers starter Jordan Zimmermann couldn’t make it out of the sixth inning of Sunday’s start against the Rays. Zimmermann left with a strained right groin, MLB.com’s Jason Beck reports.

Zimmermann allowed two runs on five hits and no walks with three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. He appeared to finish a pitch awkwardly after allowing a single to Evan Longoria, so catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia signaled for the team trainer to come out. Drew VerHagen relieved Zimmermann in the sixth.

Losing Zimmermann for any amount of time will be a big deal for the Tigers. The right-hander has been the club’s best starter, entering Sunday’s action with a 2.45 ERA and a 37/11 K/BB ratio in 55 innings spanning eight starts.
