Jose Fernandez wants a pitchers’ Home Run Derby, too

Recently, Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner said he’d love to participate in the Home Run Derby if asked. Shortly thereafter, Cubs ace Jake Arrieta and Cardinals veteran starter Adam Wainwright voiced their interest in a pitchers’ Home Run Derby.

You can add Marlins phenom Jose Fernandez to that list, as Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports. Fernandez said, “I want in for sure. Oh my God, it would be amazing.”

Fernandez continued, “We should do our own Home Run Derby. I think it would be very fun for baseball. I think the fans would love to see that.”

The 23-year-old right-hander has already cranked out a pair of home runs in his career, spanning parts of four seasons. While Bumgarner would be the overwhelming favorite to win any pitchers-only Home Run Derby, Fernandez could at least hold his own.
