Astros right-hander Lance McCullers was optioned to Double-A Corpus Christi after allowing six earned runs in one-third of an inning August 3 against the Rangers. The idea was to give the 21-year-old some rest so that he could be of value down the stretch.

But that period of rest has already come to an end.

Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports that McCullers will be added back to the starting rotation Sunday afternoon against the Dodgers. It’s the finale of a big three-game weekend series versus the leaders of the National League West race.

Even including that disastrous August 3 performance, McCullers boasts a 3.17 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 79/28 K/BB ratio in 76 2/3 innings this season for the American League West-leading Astros.
