Cardinals GM John Mozeliak confirmed on Wednesday that pitcher Marco Gonzales will undergo Tommy John surgery, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Gonzales will miss the rest of the 2016 season. He was ranked the Cardinals’ seventh-best prospect by MLB Pipeline.

Gonzales, 24, missed about two months of last season due to an impingement in his left shoulder. He began feeling renewed tightness towards the end of March and began the 2016 season on the disabled list. Gonzales visited Dr. Neal ElAttrache last week and spent most of the time since deciding whether or not to undergo season-ending surgery.

Gonzales pitched 34 2/3 innings in five starts and five relief appearances for the Cardinals in 2014, posting a 4.15 ERA and a 31/21 K/BB ratio. He also made six postseason appearances, five of which were scoreless stints.
