Matt Harvey and the Mets put off a decision on his partially torn ulnar collateral ligament, hoping that rest and rehab would do the trick, but today the team announced that the 24-year-old right-hander will undergo Tommy John elbow surgery.
Dr. James Andrews will do the honors later this month, meaning Harvey is all but certain to miss all of next season. He likely would have missed most or all of next year even if he immediately went under the knife upon learning of the injury, so Harvey’s return timetable hasn’t really changed.
As recently as two weeks ago Harvey was slated for a 6-8 week throwing program to test the strength of his elbow and general manager Sandy Alderson was even talking about possibly having him participate in the Arizona Fall League. That’s all a moot point now, though.
Here’s hoping he makes a full recovery and is ready to go in April of 2015.
