Matt Williams on his future: “Nobody’s spoken to me about anything at this point”
Entering what could be his final weekend as Nationals manager, Matt Williams was asked this morning about a report from CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman that he’ll be fired at the end of the season. According to Mark Zuckerman of CSNMA.com, Williams said he hasn’t heard anything about his future.
It’s not a big surprise, as Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo has said on multiple occasions that nothing will be decided until after the season. Still, all signs point to this being a lame duck weekend for Williams.
The Nationals cutting ties with Williams has felt inevitable since it was obvious they were missing out on the playoffs, but this has been an especially rough week for him. His decision-making after Jonathan Papelbon choked Bryce Harper was baffling and an excellent series of articles from Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post has exposed the dysfunction with the team.
