ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick reports that the Mets are close to agreement on a minor league contract with free agent first baseman Mike Jacobs.
The deal, once finalized, will include a non-roster invitation to spring training. Jacobs struggled mightily in his first American League season, batting a measly .228/.297/.401 last year with 132 strikeouts in just 434 at-bats for Kansas City. He’s still a fine batter against right-handers, though, and could be a small asset to the Mets if used correctly.
Jacobs played for New York back in 2005 and posted an impressive .310/.375/.710 batting line, 11 home runs and 23 RBI over 112 plate appearances as a 24-year-old. He’s now 29.
