Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo was scratched from Wednesday afternoon’s Grapefruit League game against the Marlins due to a stomach bug. How did he come down with the illness? Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that Nimmo ate undercooked chicken that he prepared himself. Puma adds that the Mets plan to teach Nimmo how to cook.
Nimmo, 25, had a breakout year for the Mets last season, batting .263/.404/.483 with 17 home runs, 47 RBI, and 77 runs scored in 535 plate appearances. What he lacks in cooking skills he more than makes up for with his baseball skills.
Still, this story is funny -- knowing, of course, that Nimmo’s illness is minor. It’s hard to undercook chicken. You have to really not know what you’re doing. At any rate, meat thermometers are $10-15. Hopefully the Mets encourage him to invest in one.
