Three months after undergoing a five-hour surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle Mike Cameron is close to being cleared for baseball activities again.
Cameron’s agent, Mike Nicotera, told Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com that the outfielder “is doing very well” and is on schedule to resume working out at full speed shortly after Thanksgiving.
Signed to a two-year, $15.5 million contract last offseason, Cameron was basically never healthy for the Red Sox and played just 48 games while hitting .259/.328/.401 for his lowest OPS since 1998.
Edes speculates that Cameron could be pushed into a part-time or even backup role for 2011 depending on what the Red Sox do in free agency, with outfielders Jayson Werth and Carl Crawford both reportedly on their shopping list.
