Jamie Moyer underwent three different surgeries this offseason and turned 47 in November, but he’s not yet thinking retirement. He spoke with the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Andy Martino on Saturday:
“The way I look at it, why limit myself? If I would have limited myself at 29, when I was released for the second or third time, I wouldn’t be playing. That was what, 18 years ago? If I would have believed what they said, you know, ‘take a coaching job, and if something comes up for you with another job you can take it.’ If I would have followed that route, I would have never known what these last 18 years would have brought me.”
Moyer posted a respectable 4.94 ERA and 1.36 WHIP last season and clearly still has a deep love for the game. The Phillies obviously view him as a contributor, whether in the starting rotation or out of the bullpen, because they signed him to a two-year, $16 million contract extension one month after his 45th birthday.
