“Not looking good” for Giancarlo Stanton to play again this season

To the surprise of no one who saw Giancarlo Stanton get hit in the face with a fastball last week, Marlins manager Mike Redmond told Joe Frisaro of the 24-year-old slugger is unlikely to play again this season.

In addition to posting some gruesome before-and-after pictures yesterday Stanton also underwent further testing on his facial injuries, after which Redmond said: “It’s probably not looking good for him” to return before 2015.

However, the manager also said: “His mindset is he wants to come back and play. Ours is, absolutely, if it can happen.”

Don’t expect doctors to be quite as open to the possibility and really there’s little reason to put Stanton’s health at even a small amount of risk for him to play a game or two in the final week.

Stanton would finish the season hitting .288 with a .950 OPS in 145 games and, as of right now, he leads the National League in homers (37), walks (94), total bases (299), slugging percentage (.555), and OPS.
