The Orioles have added pitcher Edwin Jackson to their 40-man roster and plan to call him up to Baltimore as soon as they make space on the 25-man roster.

The O’s signed Jackson to a minor league contract in early April. He had an opt-out clause for June 1, but extended it, forcing the Orioles’ hand. At least sort of forcing it. If he stunk, they could’ve just let him walk, but he’s been pretty effective at Triple-A, posting a 3.10 ERA in 12 appearances, all but one of which have come out of the pen. He’ll likely be a middle reliever for the Orioles, though he could move into the rotation if needed.

Jackson, 33, spent last season with the Marlins and Padres, finishing with an ugly 5.89 ERA with a 61/41 K/BB ratio in 84 innings. He pitched well in 2015 with the Cubs and Braves as a reliever, putting up a 3.07 ERA in 55 2/3 innings, so maybe there is still some gas in that tank.
