Boston has signed veteran reliever Mitchell Boggs to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Boggs was a very effective setup man for the Cardinals from 2009-2012 and even served as their closer briefly, posting a 3.33 ERA in 260 innings overall during that time. However, he was a mess for Cardinals and Rockies in 2013 and then spent all of last season pitching at Triple-A for the White Sox and Giants without much success.

Boggs is still just 31 years old, but he’ll almost surely have to put together a strong stretch at Triple-A before the Red Sox think about calling him up.
