Nick Masset’s season began with a spring training shoulder injury and has been filled with numerous setbacks since, and today the Reds announced that the reliever underwent surgery over the weekend.
That means Masset will have gone from throwing 76, 77, and 70 innings (with a combined 3.15 ERA) out of the Reds’ bullpen during the past three seasons to throwing zero innings this year.
Pitching coach Bryan Price indicated to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer that Masset is expected to be ready for spring training, although there’s no official timetable for his return.
As part of a two-year, $5.5 million contract signed in January he’ll make $3.1 million in 2013.
