Reds sign Derek Dietrich to minor league deal

Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cincinnati Reds have signed Derek Dietrich to a minor league deal. If he makes the team out of camp his big league deal will be for $2 million.

Dietrich has spent his entire career to this point with the Miami Marlins. He was designated for assignment last November after hitting .265/.330/.421 (114 OPS+) with 16 home runs, 45 RBI, and 72 runs scored in 551 plate appearances. He played all over the diamond, spending most of his time in left field and at first base. Dietrich also played some second base, third base, and right field. Despite that versatility -- and despite that strong offensive line -- he was a net negative defender and posted only a 0.4 WAR in 2018.

Still: he carries a useful bat and the ability to play a lot of positions, so this is a pretty good signing for Cincinnati.
