Jayson Stark of ESPN.com passes along some “buzz” from “one source who’s tight with the Mets brass” who says they’ll want a yes or no from Jose Reyes quickly once he becomes a free agent.

According to Stark “if Reyes’ preference is to test the market, collect offers and then ask the Mets to counter, there are indications that the Mets don’t want to play by that script.”

Of course, every team interested in re-signing every star free agent would prefer not to get involved in a long, drawn out bidding war.

If the Mets want to blow Reyes away with a huge offer I’m sure he’d be open to signing quickly, but short of that happening I’m not exactly sure why he’d want to do them any favors by not maximizing his potential value on the open market. Reyes should be able to surpass $100 million with or without the Mets’ involvement.
