Report: Ryan Madson is Dodgers’ top bullpen target

Ryan Madson

The Dodgers are expected to monitor the free agent and trade markets as they attempt to replace Zack Greinke in their starting rotation, but they are also looking to sure up their bullpen.

While Darren O’Day is expected to sign with a team on the East Coast, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reports that Ryan Madson is now the Dodgers’ “top late inning bullpen target” as they attempt to find a set-up man in front of Kenley Jansen. It was reported earlier this week that the Athletics are also making a push.

Madson underwent Tommy John surgery in April of 2012 and ended up missing three seasons while encountering numerous setbacks, but the Royals took a chance on him last winter and he rejuvenated his career by posting a 2.13 ERA and 58/14 K/BB ratio over 63 1/3 innings. The 35-year-old had a ground ball rate of 55 percent and showed a higher average fastball velocity than he did before the surgery. While he struggled during the playoffs, it was a remarkable turnaround overall.

With a thin field of free agent relievers, Madson is likely to land a multi-year deal.
