Rockies considering Eric Young as first base coach

Troy Renck of the Denver Post hears from a “source close to the situation” that Eric Young Sr. -- a major leaguer for 15 seasons -- has emerged as a strong candidate for the Rockies’ first base coach gig.

Young played for the Rockies from 1993-1997 and owns the franchise record for stolen bases with 180. The 46-year-old worked as a first base coach for the Diamondbacks from 2010-2012 and spent two weeks tutoring Rockies baserunners last spring training, so this wouldn’t a total public relations-minded hire.

Colorado is also trying to patch a vacancy at hitting coach. Double-A Tulsa manager Kevin Riggs has been interviewed, but the club is ultimately expected to bring in somebody from the outside. Dante Bichette resigned after one season to spend more time with his family.
