MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan reports that Royals catcher Salvador Perez slipped while carrying his luggage last night, tearing his MCL. He’s expected to be out for four to six weeks.

That’s obviously a huge loss for the Royals. Perez has emerged as one of the best catchers in the game. Last season, he hit .268/.297/.495 with 27 home runs and 80 RBI while ranking among the better defensive backstops.

Perez was also coming off of a terrific spring. He hit .350 with six homers and 11 RBI in 44 PA. Drew Butera, who was going to be Perez’s backup, will likely step up into a regular starting role.
