The Athletics won’t be calling up Barry Zito
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics will not be calling Barry Zito up from Triple-A Nashville, so the veteran will have to wait until 2016 if he wants to return to the majors.
Zito said, “I thought I did everything I could to get a call-up when I was going all right, but it just didn’t work out. At least I know I gave myself the best chance I could.”
In a 137 innings across 22 starts and one relief appearance, Zito posted a 3.48 ERA with a 90/60 K/BB ratio at Triple-A. The 37-year-old hasn’t pitched since early August due to tendinitis in his left shoulder. The minor league season ends on Monday, but Zito will resume a throwing program nevertheless.
Zito hasn’t pitched in the majors since September 29, 2013 with the Giants. He is a three-time All-Star and the winner of the 2002 American League Cy Young Award.
