The Texas Rangers and Globe Life announced that the Rangers new ballpark, which will open in 2020, will carry the same name as their current ballpark: Globe Life Field.
The naming rights deal has been extended through 2048 and will bring the Rangers $11 million a year. I’m sure there are people way smarter than me who can justify that kind of outlay for slapping your name on a stadium, but I know that I have never bought a product because it was the name of a stadium. It seems more likely that naming rights deals render corporate names somewhat generic, diluting it in the public’s mind as it becomes the name of a building and not a company that sells stuff. But again: people smarter than me seem to think it makes sense, so bless them all.
I’d write more about this but I have to run down to the store to buy a box of Ameriquests and check to see if they’ve restocked some fresh PSINets.
