Wily Mo Pena, now starring in Japan, wants to return to America

Wily Mo Pena

Wily Mo Pena, the former top prospect who washed out of the big leagues in 2011, wants to return to America after playing in Japan for the past three seasons.

Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors reports that Pena is looking for an MLB contract and there are already at least three interested teams.

He hit .270 with 29 homers and an .896 OPS in 119 games this season in Japan, cutting his strikeout rate and upping his walk rate compared to his old days in America, but last season Pena missed most of the year with injuries while hitting just .233 with a .628 OPS.

Pena always had big-time power, but as a big leaguer he’s a career .250 hitter with a below-league average OPS and a strikeout in more than 30 percent of his plate appearances. At age 33 he seems unlikely to get a chance as more than a part-time player.
