Brian Cashman’s contract ends later this month, but when asked last night about impending free agency he made it very clear that remaining the Yankees’ general manager is his preference, saying “that has not changed.”
Cashman will surely get plenty of criticism following a first-round exit, particularly after he missed out on Cliff Lee during the offseason, but he ultimately did a pretty solid job piecing together the back-end of the rotation and can’t be blamed for the Rafael Soriano signing that was ownership’s doing.
Yankees president Randy Levine recently indicated that the team wants Cashman back and Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York reports that the two sides are “expected to hammer out a new contract soon.” He’s been the Yankees’ GM since 1998 and during that 14-season span they’ve made the playoffs 13 times and won four World Series.
