Yoan Moncada hadn’t played in a real game with a real opponent since he last played in Cuba in late 2013. That all changed yesterday after he made his minor legaue debut for the Red Sox’ single-A affiliate, the Greenville Drive.
Moncada, to whom the Red Sox committed $63 million to sign last year -- half of which was a penalty for exceeding international bonus caps -- is 19. Following extended spring training in Fort Myers, he played second base and went 0-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. On defense he wowed the crowd with a leaping grab of a line drive in the third inning but also let a ball go through the wickets for an error that allowed an opposing run to score. The Drive lost 13-11.
