AJ Allmendinger, crew chief and team penalized for Atlanta violation

The NASCAR America takes a look at the costly punishments handed out to A.J. Allmendinger and Kyle Busch following the weekend races at Atlanta.

NASCAR has penalized JTG Daugherty Racing for having three lug nuts loose during inspection following Sunday’s Folds Of Honor QuikTrip 500 NASCAR Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The L1 violation, per the NASCAR rule book:

  • Sections Tires and Wheels -- Race finish is encumbered per Section 12.10 Encumbered Race Finishes. Lug nut(s) not properly installed.

As far as penalties:

  • Crew chief Randall Burnett will be suspended for the next three NASCAR Cup Series points events and fined $65,000.
  • Driver A.J. Allmendinger has been assessed the loss of 35 driver points. Allmendinger drops from 11th place to 35th place in the NASCAR Cup standings (tied with Chris Buescher and Jeffrey Earnhardt) due to the penalty.
  • JTG Daugherty Racing also has been assessed the loss of 35 owner points.
