Joe Gibbs quickly bearing down on Jack Roush for owner wins

The Joe Gibbs Racing crew sounds off from Kansas following Kyle Busch's Go Bowling 400.

It’s pretty clear that 2016 has thus far been the year of Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

With six wins in the first 11 races coming from drivers Kyle Busch (3 wins), Carl Edwards (2 wins) and the Daytona 500 victory by Denny Hamlin – JGR has been an imposing juggernaut from Florida to California thus far.

By comparison, Team Penske has two wins (both by Brad Keselowski), Hendrick Motorsports also has two (both by Jimmie Johnson) and Stewart-Haas Racing has one win (Kevin Harvick).

Now, Gibbs – a.k.a “The Coach” – is closing in on overtaking “The Cat In The Hat,” namely, Jack Roush of Roush Fenway Racing.

As a team owner, Gibbs now has 134 Sprint Cup wins, which leaves him one victory shy of tying Roush (135 wins) for third-place on the all-time team owner wins list.

Also, according to NBC Sports Motorsports Researcher Chris Lees, in the 47 Sprint Cup races that have been held since the start of the 2015 season, JGR has won 20 (43 percent), while Hendrick Motorsports is second with 11 wins.

Here’s the all-time Most Sprint Cup Wins By a Team Owner list:

1. Petty Enterprises: 268*
2. Rick Hendrick 242
3. Jack Roush 135
4. Joe Gibbs 134
5. Junior Johnson 132

* = Petty Enterprises’ wins total does not include the five wins by Richard Petty Motorsports, which formed in 2009 after Petty Enterprises ceased operations in 2008.
