Kyle Larson seeks to continue success he had at Texas Motor Speedway last year

Kyle Larson said he was glad to have Wednesday’s open test at Richmond International Raceway just to get back into a car after missing the Martinsville race two weeks ago.

Larson sat out the STP 500 when he fainted a day before the race. Larson was cleared to return five days after his fainting spell. He said that doctors blamed dehydration for his fainting spell. The result, he says, is that he needs to make sure he’s drinking enough fluids and that he eats breakfast.

“I hate breakfast,’’ Larson said Friday morning at Texas Motor Speedway. “I’ve got to find something that I like in the morning.’’

While he ponders that, Larson has no issues with getting back in the car after the Richmond test.

“Even though everything checked out fine, it was nice to get in the car and make sure everything was fine in the cockpit … and after being out for almost two weeks to get back into the racecar before a real race weekend,’’ Larson said.

He makes his return to a track where he scored a pair of top-10 finishes last season.

“I like Texas because it’s pretty bumpy and the surface has worn out and you can move around on the racetrack,’’ he said. “It’s just a technical racetrack that I seem to do well at, I guess. I hope we can go out this weekend and improve on those top 10s.’’

Larson’s best finish this season is eighth last month at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. His only other top-10 finish this year was a 10th at Phoenix.

“I feel like our team is about where we were when we ended the season last year,’’ he said. “We still have some work to do to be able to continue each week, but we’re getting really close. Both me and Jamie (McMurray, Larson’s teammate) have got to have a little bit better luck at the end of the races and we should be back up there challenging for wins.’’
