Long: Three thoughts on Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen

1 - The summer of Joey Logano and Kyle Busch continues. For the third time in the last five races, they finished first and second - this time it was Logano winning at Watkins Glen International and Busch placing second.

They’ve battled for the win since Kentucky. Busch won there and at Indianapolis, while Logano placed second each time. Last week at Pocono, Logano led before running out of fuel at the end, giving the lead to Busch, who then ran out of fuel.

Their success also is keeping other drivers from scoring a win and clinching a spot in the Chase. That gives hope to those trying to make the Chase via points. That could be good news for Jeff Gordon, who ranks third among non-winners in points but his advantage over other non-winners decreased Sunday after finishing 41st.

For as good as Logano and Busch have been, the question is if they can carry it into the Chase. If so, they could start a rivalry that could be fun to watch this season and beyond.

2 - Before anyone hands the title to either Joey Logano or Kyle Busch, don’t forget about Kevin Harvick, who led until running out of fuel on the final lap Sunday.

Harvick has not won a race since Phoenix in March but he’s placed in the top three in nine of 18 races since. Harvick again was fast - as he has been all year. If this team keeps putting itself in position to win, they’ll be back in victory lane soon.

3 - Can you imagine if this had been a Chase race or if there was a road course race in the Chase?

The calls made by crew chiefs, the gambles on fuel mileage or decisions to be conservative could play a major factor on who advances and who does not. With so many cars finishing on the lead lap at a road course, a mistake can cost a driver more than 20 positions.

If a champion is supposed to be the best at all disciplines, it’s time NASCAR look to adding a third road course to the schedule and putting one in the Chase sooner than later.
