NASCAR Hall of Fame suffers minor damage amid Charlotte unrest

NBC's Ron Mott is in Charlotte, home of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, provides updates and reports on the damages done to the HOF as Charlotte remains in a state of emergency.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame, located in Charlotte, North Carolina, suffered broken exterior windows Wednesday night amid protests over the police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott on Tuesday afternoon by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Both the victim and the officer who shot him were black. Police said he held a handgun as he got out of a car in an apartment complex, but others have claimed he was reading a book. Police stated they found a gun at the scene but no book.

Wednesday marked a second night of protests to the shooting with the crowd turning violent. Gov. Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency for Charlotte and deployed National Guard and State Highway Patrol troopers to assist local police.

The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, which manages the Hall of Fame, issued a statement about the damage Thursday morning:

The events that have transpired over the last 48 hours have been incredibly difficult for our community. We continue to keep open lines of communication with the City, CMPD and our partners to monitor the latest developments. The damage at our CRVA venues consists of broken exterior windows at the Charlotte Convention Center and NASCAR Hall of Fame and a breach that took place at one of our tenant spaces at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Buffalo Wild Wings.

We do have events scheduled to take place in the Charlotte Convention Center and NASCAR Hall of Fame today and in the coming days. The safety of these meeting attendees who have traveled significant distances to convene in Charlotte is especially important to us and we’re working to take appropriate security precautions in collaboration with our partners at CMPD. We’ll continue to assess and communicate with our partners throughout the day.
