Sign of the times: Gordon’s name, No. 88 placed above garage stall at IMS

Jeff Gordon won’t officially climb into a race car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway until Friday, but a sure sign that he’ll be replacing Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Sunday’s Brickyard 400 was made official Thursday.

A nameplate that featured Gordon’s monicker and the No. 88 was hung over the team’s garage door in Gasoline Alley. That will be his home for the next three days. And then the process will be repeated next week at Pocono.

This will be the first time in Gordon’s NASCAR Sprint Cup career that he has driven a car with a number other than his famous No. 24.

The last time Gordon raced any type of NASCAR car other than No. 24 was back in 1992, when he drove the No. 1 Ford for Bill Davis in the then-Busch Series (now Xfinity Series).
