Carmelo Anthony left the Knicks’ Monday night loss to the Heat with a knee injury, and he said afterwards that he’s on the verge of getting to the point health-wise where he needs to shut it down for the season.
It was inevitable that it would eventually get to this point, and this was about when it seemed likely he would do it. The All-Star Game is in New York City this weekend, and Anthony is scheduled to be a starter for the Eastern Conference. Given the location and his stated desire to be an “ambassador” to try to get other free agents to come to the Knicks, of course he’d try to participate if he could.

But after that? The Knicks are 10-42. It makes no sense for him to play again this season. They’re in position to land a high pick in the lottery, and he needs to get healthy for next season.
