Delonte West makes himself eligible for D-League

Delonte West can still play — he’s just 29, and he averaged 9.6 points a game last season for the Dallas Mavericks, starting half the team’s games.

But he was enough of a problem and distraction off the court that even the player-friendly Mavericks let him go and no team has inked him for this season.

So to show everyone what he can do, he’s headed to the D-League, tweets Marc Stein of ESPN.

Will it work? Can it get him back to the NBA? The D-League has been a launching pad for others and he should put up big numbers there. But he’s going to have to show more than just skill on the court, he’s going to have to show he will not be a huge distraction off it.

Either way we’ll be watching.
