Dirk Nowitzki: “We need some guys that can make plays”
We already talked about this over the weekend — Oklahoma City sweeping Dallas out of the playoffs was the end result of moves owner Mark Cuban made last summer. (Well, that and Oklahoma City is a very good team.)
They didn’t have enough support for Dirk Nowitzki anymore (and the big German didn’t play to his level of the year either). But that was the risk when Tyson Chandler, J.J. Barea, Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson were let go, then Lamar Odom didn’t pan out. Jason Terry and Jason Kidd come off the books and now the Mavs have flexibility to go with Dirk.Nowitzki, for his part, wants some stars, he said after Game 4, via the Dallas Morning News (hat tip to SLAM).
“We need some guys that can make plays for themselves,” Nowitzki said. “That’s pretty obvious. If you look at all the top teams now, they have at least two-three guys they can throw the ball to and they do their thing.”
Nowitzki then specifically mentioned how Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden each carried a Thunder team on different nights in the four-game sweep of the Mavericks.“If you want to be an elite team in the league right now, you have to have 2-3 guys that can go off at any time,” Nowitzki added.
The Mavericks will make a run at Deron Williams, the Dallas native. But if D-Will decides on Brooklyn, and with Orlando trying to keep Dwight Howard, would the Mavericks consider trying to reunite Steve Nash with Dirk? Just a thought
