Jeff Green says he wants to be leader on Celtics this season

The Boston Celtics will be Rajon Rondo’s team this season — at least until he gets traded. He is the champion, the veteran, and clear and away the best player on the team.

However the best teams do not have just one leader.

Jeff Green wants to step into that role with the Celtics (he did lead the team in scoring last season at 16.9 a game). Entering his seventh year in the NBA and his prime, Green said he worked on his all around game to help step into that role, reports A. Sherrod Blakely at

“Just getting better as a player, all around,” Green said. “It was more just becoming a better all-around player, trying to take the next step and become a leader on this team and will my team to win. That’s my main focus, just get better at each spot on the court.”

You know what leaders do? Bring it every night.

When Jeff Green is on he can light it up on any team. But as Blakely pointed out, he went out opening night last season and put up 25 on the road, then in the Celtics next two games at home he scored 20 points combined. The entire season — heck, Green’s entire career — has been like that. You never knew what Green would show up on any given night.

Green could lead this team — likely not very far, but that again depends on where Rondo is playing at the start of the season and after the trade deadline — but not unless he’s matured and is going to bring consistent effort every night.
