Kerr has leverage so Knicks add fourth year to deal. Everyone now waits on decision.

Stan Van Gundy signed in Detroit, and with that the sweet power of leverage landed in Steve Kerr’s lap.

Multiple teams want to talk to Kerr but now two teams wanted him badly, the New York Knicks and the Golden State Warriors. From there it’s simple supply and demand — there are two teams and only one Steve Kerr.

The Knicks had been hesitant to give Kerr all the money and more importantly all four years guaranteed that he wanted, but now they basically had no choice and gave in, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

After resisting for weeks, the New York Knicks offered Steve Kerr a fourth guaranteed season on a proposed contract, league sources told Yahoo Sports….

Within the Knicks organization, there was a sense a deal with Kerr wouldn’t get done until the organization met that concession. For a franchise that has long shown little inhibition in delivering lucrative management and coaching contracts, this seems to be a far more restrained negotiation process on New York’s part.

And so we wait for Kerr to make his decision. He is the next domino to fall in the coaching ranks (even though he has never coached a day), he will have to decide before a lot of other decisions are made.

Kerr has narrowed his coaching choices to the Knicks and Golden State Warriors, and a decision is expected soon. Executives involved in the process insist there’s no bidding war in play, and that Kerr has simply been weighing the two stark differences in the job: a contender in his California home; and a rebuilding project with his old coach, Knicks president Phil Jackson, at Madison Square Garden.

The Warriors are clearly the better team right now, that’s a roster on the cusp of contention — but combine that with an impatient ownership group and there is no time to learn on the job. Expectations in Golden State are to win now.

In New York, you get a year or two to figure it all out — the roster is a mess and installing the triangle properly takes time anyway. He has a little cushion.

I expect we will hear a decision from Kerr by the weekend…. but then again he has the leverage now. He can decide whenever he wishes.
