League admits Blake Griffin should not have been ejected Christmas night

Los Angeles Clippers v Golden State Warriors

OAKLAND, CA - DECEMBER 25: Head Coach Doc Rivers of the Los Angeles Clippers comes out on the court to get Blake Griffin #32 who was ejected for his second flagrant foul against the Golden State Warriors during the fourth quarter at ORACLE Arena on December 25, 2013 in Oakland, California. When it happened everyone — from analyst Jon Barry to the NBA Twitterverse — knew it was a bad set of calls. Blake Griffin got ejected for two technical fouls after he had two flagrant fouls committed against him. The game had gotten a little physical but the referees — led by Bill Kennedy — tried to do too much to gain control of a game that never really got out of control. That was especially true of the second incident (which you can see above) when Griffin got in a tussle with Golden State’s Andrew Bogut under the basket.

Thursday the league released this statement:

“After a league review of the Clippers-Warriors game, we have come to the conclusion that Blake Griffin should not have been ejected from the game. A common foul should have been called on Griffin for initially attempting to dislodge the Warriors’ Andrew Bogut and a technical foul should have been assessed to Bogut for grabbing Griffin by the shirt and wrestling with him.”

As for the Draymond Green elbow to Griffin’s head (which got Green ejected and led to the first technical foul for Griffin), the league didn’t comment on it but did fine Green $15,000 for “failing to leave the court in a timely manner upon his ejection.” You can’t stick around and argue. The league is big on that, even if you shouldn’t have been tossed.
