Matt Bonner will not be joining Canada for the World Championships

Canada’s just not ready for Matt Bonner.

Bonner, who married a Canadian woman in 2008, had applied for expedited Canadian citizenship in order to be ready to compete in the World Championships for the Canadian team this summer. But via FanHouse, we learn from the Globe and Mail that Bonner has been denied accelerated Candian citizenship, keeping him out of the games this summer for the Maple Leaf gang.

It’s a pretty big blow to the Canadian team which will now only feature one NBA player, Joel Anthony, and one NBA rookie, Andy Rautins. That’s going to put quite the damper on their already thin chances. It’s a shame that citizenship troubles can pre-empt a player’s eligibility, but then, we don’t want players just running on to any team that needs an NBA guy.

Canada’s likely to get creamed, but then again, it’s hard to argue their chances were significantly better with Bonner on board. But his jovial smile will probably be missed around the events.
