NBA: Grizzlies got away with foul before Matt Barnes’ halfcourt winner against Pistons

The Grizzles received plenty of good fortune on Matt Barnes’ halfcourt game-winner against the Pistons on Wednesday.

1. Barnes made the darn shot.

2. Officials missed Dave Joerger and Mike Conley trying to call timeout before Barnes hoisted.

3. Detroit forward Marcus Morris missed the game’s final jumper, one possible only because Barnes shot so early.

If that weren’t enough…

The NBA ruled Zach Randolph should have been called for fouling Ersan Ilyasova on a putback attempt just before Barnes got the ball. The Last Two Minutes Report:

Ilyasova (DET) secures the offensive rebound and as he attempts the shot, Randolph (MEM) makes contact with his arm that affects the shot attempt.

That would have sent Ilyasova – a career 77% free-throw shooter – to the line for two shots with eight seconds left and the Pistons already leading by two.

We don’t know for certain the Pistons would have won, but they would have been in great shape. Then again, the odds were highly in their favor when Matt Barnes pulled up from halfcourt with three seconds still on the clock.

As Barnes said, “Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good.”
