The professional basketball team that plays in New Orleans underwent a rebranding prior to last season, and changed its name from the Hornets (which has since been returned to Charlotte) to the Pelicans.

The change came with it a new logo and a temporarily-scary mascot, and now, just one year in, the Pelicans have unveiled a new alternate uniform that will be used somewhat sparingly during the upcoming season.

From the official release:

The Pelicans will wear the uniform four times during the team’s home schedule beginning with Opening Night on Oct. 28 against the Orlando Magic. Every fan in attendance will also receive a red Pelicans t-shirt courtesy of Smoothie King on Opening Night. The team will also wear the uniform in its last two home games before Christmas – Tuesday, Dec. 16 vs. Utah and Saturday, Dec. 20 against Portland. Lastly, the Pelicans will wear the red uniforms at the team’s FANtastic FANale on Wednesday, April 15 against the San Antonio Spurs.

“We couldn’t be more excited to unveil our new alternate red uniforms just a week away from the start of training camp,” said Owner Tom Benson. “Our fans have had such a positive response to all of the Pelicans gear that is available – we can’t wait to see everyone in red on Opening Night.”

They’re great if you like red, but slightly odd considering just how little fans probably associate that color with the team’s identity. That all changes opening night, however, so here’s one more look so that the fans in New Orleans can begin to get used to it.
