Report: Bucks extend contract of GM John Hammond

Jason Kidd demanded front-office control with the Nets before leaving Brooklyn.

Could the now-Bucks coach attempt the same power play in Milwaukee, where he’s close with co-owner Marc Lasry?

It’s not happening now, at least.

Charles Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Hammond has done well to stock the Bucks with young talent – Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jabari Parker, Greg Monroe, Khris Middleton, John Henson and Michael Carter-Williams. Milwaukee surprisingly won 41 games last season and even challenged the Bulls in the playoffs.

The Bucks’ future is bright, and Hammond deserves credit.

He’s also smart to lock up an extension now. Milwaukee might take a step back in the short term with the loss of reliable veterans like Zaza Pachulia, Jared Dudley and Ersan Ilyasova. It’s understated how much those three helped the Bucks last season while younger players – while more valuable – weren’t quite ready to win.

At some point, Milwaukee should get the both worlds, winning with youth. Now, it’s more likely Hammond remains in place when it happens.

Then, it’ll be harder for Kidd or anyone else to supplant him.
