The Celtics were reportedly finalizing a deal with free agent Evan Turner way back in July, but he remains unsigned by the team, even at this late point in the offseason.

The reason is that GM Danny Ainge wanted to maintain as much roster flexibility as possible, and was likely working the phones in order to try to create some magic.

But in absence of any significant deals taking place, Turner appears to be a part of the team’s plans, at least in the immediate future.

From A. Sherrod Blakely of CSNNE.com:

Source says #Celtics signing of Evan Turner will be completed/announced before training camp starts on Sept. 30.

Turner was superficially impressive in the first part of the season with the Sixers, averaging 17.4 points per game, albeit with a low true shooting percentage of 50.4 percent.

Once traded to the Pacers, he had trouble getting consistent minutes, which says a lot considering just how desperate Indiana was for offensive production last season; Turner averaged just 3.3 points per game in 12 postseason appearances.

Boston is rebuilding, so taking a flyer on Turner with the intent on developing him is relatively harmless. There are plenty of other guys Turner will have to compete with for minutes. But on a Celtics team that’s focused on getting young talent to mature for the future, at least he’s got a fighting chance.
